Instructions for Uploading Objects

Instructions for Sharing Your Learning Objects via LINK

These instructions cover two steps:

(1) Creating your SOL*R account (if you don't already have one)

(2) Logging into SOL*R and uploading your object(s)

There is also a link at the bottom to some optional Word templates which will assist you to mark the Creative Commons license on your objects.

(1) Creating Your SOL*R Account

SOL*R is the learning object repository software which underpins LINK. SOL*R is operated by BCcampus. To obtain your SOL*R login, start at the SOL*R homepage and choose "Register" on the top menu bar. Account approval is a manual process, so it may take up to 48 hours for your account to be activated.

(2) Uploading Learning Objects to SOL*R

Once you're familiar with the process, an object can be uploaded in three minutes or less. Here's how to do it:

(a) From the SOL*R homepage choose "Login to SOL*R" in the left menu bar.

(b) In the left menu bar choose "Contribute a Resource".

(c) SOL*R will walk you through a five-stage process to create metadata and upload the file(s) for your object. The table below points out some LINK-related tips for particular stages of the upload process. These instructions are not intended to document every step of the submission process. Also see the SOLR checklist to uploading a document..

Stage Instructions
Choosing an Item Type Most likely you will be contributing a learning object.
Choosing a License We recommend that you choose the "Creative Commons" license. This allows librarians anywhere to find and use your object. If you choose the "BC Commons" license type, only registered BCcampus users can find your object, which will greatly reduce the chance someone will use it (and having people use it is, after all, the point of sharing it).
"Required Info" tab - Main Discipline drop-down menu You MUST choose "Library and Information Literacy". If you do not, your object will not appear in the LINK collection.
"Required Info" tab - Additional Keywords

We hope to develop some guidelines for keyword inclusion, and possibly a standardized vocabulary. In the meantime, if for example your object relates to a particular database or OPAC, please make sure to include its name.

For SLAIS student projects that are loaded into ALPS LINK, add keywords: SLAIS_student_project. Also, add the course (i.e. LIBR 559K: Topics In Computer-Based Information Systems: Open Access)

"Educational Details" tab - Type of Resource Some types which may be most relevant for librarian-created objects: Exercise, Activity, Lesson Plan, Demonstration, Assessment, Tutorial, Learner Tool.

The final screen asks you to Submit for Moderation. When you click here, your object will be available in the collection, generally within 30-60 minutes.

Optional Word Templates for LINK Objects

You may wish to use one of the Word templates to ensure the Creative Commons license is properly marked on the document.
